TiVo Upgrade
March 9th, 2003
So here it is, the amazing 3Com 3C460B USB to Ethernet adapter (I paid 7 bucks on eBay, it's available for 20 bucks online). This adapter will be my gateway to a telephone free home. This baby will be my latest addition to my new TiVo Series 2. All I have to do is connect this puppy into my TiVo, and connect the adapter into my AirPort. It should act as the "phone" line for my TiVo.
Instead of dialing in over a real phone line, TiVo will be able to use the cable modem for it's nightly call. Not only will this get me the extremely valuable program data faster than the POS old-school modem inside the TiVo, but in April when TiVo rolls out the HMO (Home Media Option for those of you who are not technically inclined) I can network my TiVo with my laptop and do all kinds of dorky things.
In addition to being able to send shows from one TiVo to another through this miracle of technology, play slideshows from my laptop through my TV, and schedule recordings remotely over the internet, the most important new feature to me is being able to steam digital music from my laptop to my stereo. You see I have no CDs worth listening to. All of my good music these days has been downloaded and sits on my new backup drive and laptop. Now, TiVo will let me browse that collection and play it through my home stereo.
Even more geeky, I can eventually get one of those newfangled wireless USB to Ethernet adapters and put the AirPort anywhere in the house I want to. My TiVo and laptop will then wirelessly communicate with each other, oh so nerdy. The whole world will then bow down before wireless boy, and the lord will say "This is good".

if you can play music and do other "dorky" things, would you be able to place a recorded tivo program onto a hard drive or other recordable media?
Sorry, Lynn. TiVo (the company) has always made it difficult to get the programs out of the TiVo and onto another type of media. This way TiVo (again the company) can keep away from law suits and such.
The guys over at deal database have ways of "extracting" the video from the TiVo, but it involves getting inside the operating system (TiVo's that is) and a whole lotta other technological mumbo-jumbo that I'm not willing to get into.
I agree, that getting the shows off of TiVo though would be great, but I guess I'm just not "dorky" enough.
Yet.
