Panther... Roar
June 29th, 2003
Earlier this week I "grabbed" a copy of Mac OS X 10.3 - Developer Preview (Code-name: Panther) and have been playing around for the last couple of days. Since I didn't want to run a Preview OS on my primary drive, I pulled the 60 gig drive out of my fancy Drive Enclosure, and put in an old 4 gig seagate drive from my recently donated PC. I must say that Panther is definitely cool.
Here are my initial thoughts:
- Finder:
- The metal look sucks.
- The fancy sidebar with all my disks and aliases is great, makes getting around the file system much easier.
- Everything is much quicker; menus, searching, and scrolling are almost like OS 9!
- iChat AV:
- Free phone calls, very cool.
- Video conferencing, also cool.
- Amateur porno, we'll wait and see.
- Mail:
- HTML rendering actually works!
- Seems much faster.
- I love the new sound effects.
- Exposé:
- How did I live without this?
- Fast User Switching:
- I don't use multiple users, but it's really cool to watch.
- Preview:
- Goodby Adobe Reader.
