Summer of Flop
July 23rd, 2003
Far be it from me to poop on casual work attire, but this is getting ridiculous.
Every day, on my daily metro commute, I see it all. I see lawyers and politicians in their suits, service people in their overalls, waiters, bike messengers, mailmen, cops, robbers, bald women, and even people who wear scarves and gloves in the summer.
Lately though, there has been an uprising of those stupid flip-flops on almost every girl I see. Sure, these are OK for the beach, but not at the office. Not only do they look tarable, but the last thing I need when I'm sitting at my desk is that flop-flop-flop sound every time someone gets up for a cup of coffee. Many of the flip-flops I see are black soled with black straps, but trust me, this does not fool anyone into thinking you are wearing real shoes. In addition, I'm now seeing what I guess you call designer flip-flops. They have the ultra-turbo, dock martin, look I'm as tall as the empire state building - 21 inch high soles. Does this mean that the fashion world is actually promoting this trend? excuse me for a second C'MON PEOPLE, IS THIS THE SUMMER OF BAD TASTE?
I have tried to keep my mouth shut on this for a while due to fear of persecution for my beliefs, but thanks to this article from CNN I can finally come forward.

perhaps you mean that they look TARAble. i'm not familiar with the term TERAble. perhaps an edit of the blog entry is in order. ...and i mean fast, too, because she just noticed it.
omigod, lerry! first, you spell my name wrong. second, you don't even point out that i'm the one that showed you the article. third, if you think that big soles = fashion world promotion, then we need to talk. and fourth, i'd like to see what you think after you spend a week in flip flops. ...that's right. this is a challenge. en garde, buddy! we're going shoppin' -- daddy needs new shoes!
oh, i forgot to mention that i agree with tara's take on the flip-flop issue. i think they're fun casual footwear, but i do not think that they are appropriate biz casual or mon-thurs office type footwear. other than that, i have no real problem with them.
good post.
