Roomba's first Rumba
August 20th, 2003
When I got home Roomba was fully charged and ready for action. I started it off in the living room, where it had no problems. It cruised around for about 45 minutes, and covered the whole room. I couldn't take my eyes off this little guy, it moves around in a completely erratic pattern, bumping into walls, furniture, and people, at which point it turns and tries another direction. I had swiffered this weekend, so I thought it wouldn't find much, but it looks like it reached down into the cracks between the floorboards and picked up all of the dirt that the swiffer missed.
I then let it work it's magic in the kitchen, my kitchen is not that big, so it only took about 10 or 15 minutes before it had reached all of the corners of the room. It's great to watch, it can get beneath the toe kick, and with its little spinning side brush, it even gets beneath the stove and the fridge.
Right now it's working on the bedroom, which is just as well, it's a little loud to keep running while I'm watching TV and Big Brother is coming on in a minute. I can hear it in the background just a bit, but it's really not overly loud, almost like a dust buster when in the room with it.
I'm so happy, now I just have to come up with a name for it. What do you think about Rosy?

First of all, either Swiffer sucks, or the Roomba came pre-loaded with dirt. That's an amazing amount of ickiness that came out of the little fella. If you're that dirty, I don't know how I feel about you coming to visit in September. Perhaps you should hire us a cleaning service or lend us your Roomba to compensate for the dirt you're sure to be tracking in.
Secondly, Rosie's been done for household cleaning robots. Remember the Jetsons maid? Perhaps after a few more days together you'll get a truer sense of her/his personality and then we can help you get to the best name.
Roisy is definitely what your future will be with your new "roomba" dance partner. But I agree with Tara, about the name part. And you know, now she's cleaning your whole apartment TARAtory, you might want to consider another TARAfic name.
About the dirt: there's no dirt in your apartment. It's spotless. Or else you've got an obsessive-compulsive cleanliness freak for a vacuum.
Either way, I'm glad you're having fun.
i'm with the rest of the crowd -- no rosy. how's about pierre? or freak? or bob? those all seem to strike me as appropriate names, although i'm not sure why. how's about you make pierre/freak/bob's daily "finds" a part of the blog?
just realized there's not a spot for "general comments" so it doesn't appear that we're commenting on an entry if we're not. ...regardless...
we're heading to north carolina for the week, and i'm not sure if we'll have internet access or not. don't be alarmed if you don't see new comments by us between now and august 31st. we have not been kidnapped by aliens. we are on the beach. (we'll have our cell phones with us, but we're not sure if we'll have reception or not.)
in the meantime, have a great week, and do lots of fun stuff so that we have something new to read about when we get home. :-)
I had no idea what kind of trouble you were getting into. First the indoor barbecue, now the self propelled vacuum cleaner with a virtual wall. What's next - a craftmatic adjustable bed to make watching tv easier?
Also, Rosy isn't a good name. How about Timmy?
