How Dumb Do They Think We Are?
October 26th, 2003
Today I went to Quizno's for lunch and couldn't help notice that the marketing folks had jumped on the "make up stupid words to try to sell your product" bandwagon. All over the place there are stupid marketing words. On the wall is a poster that reads spectacolo, another sign reads formaggio, on the back of the bag of chips it reads certifico, and everything in the restaurant is apparently perfecto. How dumb do they think we are? Are the Quizno's guys going through some sort of identity crisis? Last time I looked, Quizno's is from Colorado, not some magical far-off foreign land.
Now when it comes to Quizno's I decided I can almost excuse it, at least they decided to use real words. The Olive Garden marketing department decided that Americans are too stupid for that. They decided that they should just make up words, and started pushing their Hospitaliano. Hey, it sounds like a real Italian word.
But it doesn't stop there. Taco Bell has it's Enchirito. And what exactly is an Enchirito? Trust me, although it sounds Mexican, don't go to Mexico and order one.
After coming home I thought it would be fun to try to compile a list of all of the stupid marketing words that the restaurant folks using. Excuse me if I left anything out, but my hands are full while I finish off my Ultimate Zinger Twister Swirl Xtreme combo.
The not-so-complete list of stupid restaurant food names:
Häagen-Dazs
Häagen-Dazs
Taco Bell
Enchirito
McDonald's
McRibb
McGriddles
McNuggets
McMuffin
Burger King
Croissan'wich
Taco Bueno
Muchaco
Pizza Hut
P'ZONE
Jack in the Box
Fajita Pita
Arby's
Arby-Q
I know this is a pretty short list, but I'm tired and my brain isn't working too well. If you come up with any let me know and I will try to keep the list up to date.

i'm quite surprised that the muchaco is still around. i remember vividly that it debuted in 1992, and if i remember correctly, it's a crispy taco surrouned by a soft taco, with a layer of bean dip between. mmm. tasty.
This is hysterical..........I see these names all the time, but I never thought about how funny these were.
Somehow, you always see more in the world than I do. If you ever decide to leave architecture, you're be fabulous in marketing. And heaven knows, Quizmos needs you!
