Gearing Up for the New Year
December 26th, 2003
I'm getting geared up for my New Years resolution, no more landline.
That's right, I actually still have a regular old-school landline. Only about 2 ¼ people know the number, I have used it for about 34 minutes in the last 3 months, and only 96 minutes in the last year. I pay a whopping $14 a month for the service, as I downgraded to the ultra-cheapo, unadvertised, no-options service plan. I never receive calls on the phone (except for telemarketers), only call out on 800 numbers, and don't even have a ringer on the phone.
I think that I am the perfect candidate to cut off this antiquated service and I will now be wireless only. All systems seem to be put in place, TiVo is online through the AirPort on the cable modem, cell phone coverage is operational (I do not seem to get many dropped calls or poor connections), and everyone calls my cell anyway so there is nobody to tell about the change.
So what's next? I'm gonna try to go it alone, but I have a backup plan. If my big plans of a wireless world do not work out I have my eyes set on VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). I can get really good rates from Vonage (the same or less than a regular phone line), free long distance (even to Canada), I can pick my area code, no more telemarketing calls, and I get all of the features I cut off of my regular phone when I opted out for the ultra-cheapo plan.

Also, if you tend to talk to other people with computers, check out Skype. I use it all the time, very good and very free. =)
This looks pretty cool, however iChat AV is filling the bill for me on this front. I think that the only feature that is missing from iChat is the "missed call" message box.
But, let's see what happens tomorrow at Mac World. You never know what Steve has up his sleeve.
